εἰ δὲ μήτε ἀκριβείᾳ τῶν αἰσθήσεων λείπεται τῶν ἀνθρώπων ταῦτα μήτε τῷ ἐνδιαθέτῳ λόγῳ, ἐκ περιουσίας δὲ εἰπεῖν μηδὲ τῷ προφορικῷ, οὐκ ἂν ἀπιστότερα ἡμῶν εἴη κατὰ τὰς φαντασίας. καὶ ἐφ’ ἑκάστου δὲ τῶν ἀλόγων ζῴων ἴσως ἱστάντας τὸν λόγον ταῦτα ἀποδεικνύειν δυνατόν ἐστιν. οἶον γοῦν τίς οὐκ ἂν εἴποι τοὺς ὄρνιθας ἀγχινοίᾳ τε διαφέρειν καὶ τῷ προφορικῷ κεχρῆσθαι λόγῳ; οἴ γε οὐ μόνον τὰ παρόντα ἀλλὰ καὶ τὰ ἐσόμενα ἐπίστανται καὶ ταῦτα τοῖς συνιέναι δυναμένοις προδηλοῦσιν, ἄλλως τε σημαίνοντες καὶ τῇ φωνῇ προαγορεύοντες.
