Ὅτι ὁ Καύκασος τὸ ὄρος περικλείει ἀπὸ βορρᾶ τὰς δύο θαλάσσας, Κασπίαν τε καὶ Πόντον, εἶργον Σαρμάτας τε καὶ Μαιώτας ἀπὸ Ἰβήρων καὶ Ἀλβανῶν. Ἔστι δὲ εὐδενδρότατον τὸ ὄρος· ἀπολήγει δ᾿ αὐτοῦ τὸ νοτολιβυκὸν ἄκρον κατὰ τὰ μυχὰ τοῦ Εὐξείνου· ἔνθα πόλις Διοσκουριὰς, ἥτις πόλις καὶ ἀρχή ἐστι τοῦ ἰσθμοῦ τοῦ μεταξὺ Εὐξείνου καὶ Ὑρκανίας· καὶ ἐμπορεῖόν ἐστιν αὕτη ἡ Διοσκουριὰς πάντων τῶν ἀνατολικωτέρων ἐθνῶν κοινόν· συνέρχεσθαι γάρ φασιν εἰς αὐτὴν ἔθνη ἀλλήλων ἑτερόγλωσσα πλείω τῶν ο΄.
