πάλαι μὲν γὰρ τῆς Εὐρώπης παρειλήφει τὰ σκῆπτρα μετὰ τὴν τοῦ πατρὸς τελευτήν· καὶ ἐκείνου δέ γε περιόντος ἐκοινώνει τῆς βασιλείας. προσέλαβεν οὑν καὶ τὴν Ἀσίαν καὶ τὰ λειπόμενα τῆς Λιβύης, ἄπαιδος ἀναιρεθέντος τοῦ Βάλεντος.
