Ἡ δὲ θάλαττα πολλὰ καὶ παντοῖα φύει καί ἐστιν ὥσπερ ζώων τι γένος ἐν αὐτῇ καὶ φυτῶν. Ὅσα δ' ἐν τῇ ἀμπώτει δένδρα μέγεθος ἔχοντα καὶ κάρπον τυγχάνει περὶ τούτων οὐκ ἄν τις ἴσως ἀποδοίη τῇ θαλάττῃ τὴν τροφὴν ἀλλ' ἐνδέχεσθαι πότιμον ἕλκειν ἐν τῇ γῇ τὰς ῥίζας τὴν δὲ θάλατταν ἀβλαβῆ περιέχουσαν εἶναι καθάπερ καὶ τὸ ὕδωρ τοῖς ἐνύδροις· ἀλλὰ τούτων μὲν πέρι λόγος ἕτερος. Καὶ ὅσα δὴ πρὸς αὐτῇ τῇ θαλάττῃ φύεται χρῆταί πως τῇ ἁλμυρίδι πρὸς εὐσθένειαν καὶ τροφήν· ἔοικε γὰρ τοῦτο ἴδιόν τι γένος εἶναι παρὰ τὰ εἰρημένα καθάπερ ἀνὰ μέσον ὄν[τα].
