Καὶ τοὺς γύρους οὐκ εὐθὺς συμπληροῦσιν ὅπως ῥιζωθῇ τὰ κάτω πρότερον, εἰ δὲ μὴ φέρονται πρὸς τὸ ἄνω· τρέφει γὰρ καὶ αὔξει πάνθ' ὁ ἥλιος καὶ ὁ ἀήρ. Ὄντων δὲ τῶν μὲν βαθυρρίζων τῶν δ' ἐπιπολαιορρίζων διὰ τοῦτο τοὺς γύρους οὐκ ἰσοβαθεῖς ὀρύττουσιν (ἀλλὰ βαθυτέρους) τοῖς ἐπιπολαιορρίζοις οἷον ἐλάᾳ καὶ συκῇ βουλόμενοι πιέζεσθαι καὶ ὥσπερ ἀντιταττόμενοι πρὸς τὰς φύσεις.
