καὶ τοὺς γύρους οὐκ εὐθὺς συμπληροῦσιν ὅπως ῥιζωθῇ τὰ κάτω πρότερον, εἰ δὲ μὴ φέρονται πρὸς τὸ ἄνω· τρέφει γὰρ καὶ αὔξει πάνθ᾽ ὁ ἥλιος καὶ ὁ ἀήρ. ὄντων δὲ τῶν μὲν βαθυρρίζων τῶν δ᾽ ἐπιπολαιορρίζων διὰ τοῦτο τοὺς γύρους οὐκ ἰσοβαθεῖς ὀρύττουσιν ἀλλὰ βαθυτέρους τοῖς ἐπιπολαιορρίζοις οἷον ἐλάᾳ καὶ συκῇ βουλόμενοι πιέζεσθαι καὶ ὥσπερ ἀντιταττόμενοι πρὸς τὰς φύσεις.
