τοῦ μὲν οὖν θᾶττον ἐκτελεοῦν οὐχ ἡ ἰσχὺς ἀλλὰ ταῦτα τὰ αἴτια, δι᾽ ὃ καὶ πολυγονώτερα. καίτοι τάχ᾽ ἄν τις ἀντείποι περὶ τοῦ πλήθους φάσκων πλείω τὰ ἀπὸ τῶν δένδρων εἶναι. πολλὰ γὰρ ἕκαστον ἔχειν τῶν περικαρπίων τὸ δὲ δένδρον ἀφ᾽ ἑνὸς γεγενῆσθαι σπέρματος. ἀλλὰ ταῦτα μὲν ἐλαφρότερα καὶ οἷον ἀπηρτημένα ἂν φανείη. τὸ δὲ μὴ δύνασθαι τηρεῖν τὰ γένη μηδ᾽ ἐξομοιοῦν ἐν ἀμφοῖν ἂν ἔχοι τὸ αἴτιον, καὶ τῷ πλείω χρόνον τὰ κατὰ γῆς μᾶλλον κατακρατεῖσθαι καὶ τῷ τοὺς σωματικοὺς ὄγκους ἀντισπᾷν.
