# Interlinea

> A reading companion for Latin and Ancient Greek. Every word of a real text gets its dictionary form, its grammar and how it links to the rest of the sentence; word analysis is produced by a language model, checked against a tokenizer and a grammar validator, and cached once per sentence rather than regenerated per visitor.

## Agents: three ways in

Free, read only, no key or account. Every answer carries the citation, canonical URL, CTS URN where the edition has one, and the edition's credit and licence. Nothing calls a language model: analyses and notes are the stored ones. Please keep to about 120 requests a minute. Docs: https://interlinea.aeterna-institute.org/docs (every page also as Markdown: add .md)

1. MCP server (Streamable HTTP, stateless, no auth): https://interlinea.aeterna-institute.org/mcp
Example: `claude mcp add --transport http interlinea https://interlinea.aeterna-institute.org/mcp`
2. JSON API, described by OpenAPI 3.1 at https://interlinea.aeterna-institute.org/api/v1/openapi.json
   Example: `curl "https://interlinea.aeterna-institute.org/api/v1/text?ref=Virgil,%20Aeneid%201.46&include=analysis"`
3. Markdown: add `.md` to any author, work or section URL, or send `Accept: text/markdown`
   Example: `curl https://interlinea.aeterna-institute.org/library/latin/virgil/aeneid/1.46.md`

MCP tools:

- `search_library` finds authors, works and topics, in English, Latin or Greek.
- `get_text` reads a section or a graded passage by link, CTS URN or citation, with links to the sections before and after.
- `get_analysis` gives the stored word-by-word analysis and a translation of each sentence.
- `lookup_word` finds a headword across the stored analyses, with example sentences and where they come from.
- `get_context` gives the stored notes on where a passage sits in its work and who is named in it.
- `list_passages` lists the graded path, levels 1 to 5.

A text can be named by its URL, a CTS URN (urn:cts:latinLit:phi0690.phi003.perseus-lat2:1.46) or a citation ("Virgil, Aeneid 1.46"). Every author, work and section page has a JSON twin under https://interlinea.aeterna-institute.org/api/v1/library/…, linked from the page as rel="alternate" type="application/json". Follow `next` to read on.

Interlinea is a project of [Aeterna Institute](https://aeterna-institute.org), a non-profit for classical languages, Great Books and Socratic inquiry. It is built and maintained by Rumi Elías Calles.

## Reading the library

- An author: https://interlinea.aeterna-institute.org/library/<language>/<author>, e.g. https://interlinea.aeterna-institute.org/library/latin/virgil
- A work (its table of contents): https://interlinea.aeterna-institute.org/library/<language>/<author>/<work>, e.g. https://interlinea.aeterna-institute.org/library/latin/virgil/aeneid
- A passage, by its citation: https://interlinea.aeterna-institute.org/library/<language>/<author>/<work>/<citation>, e.g. https://interlinea.aeterna-institute.org/library/latin/virgil/aeneid/1.46
- Every author, A to Z: https://interlinea.aeterna-institute.org/library/<language>/authors
- Search: https://interlinea.aeterna-institute.org/library/search?q=<query>
- A word, with its forms, meanings and example lines: https://interlinea.aeterna-institute.org/words/<language>/<lemma>, e.g. https://interlinea.aeterna-institute.org/words/latin/ira (all words: https://interlinea.aeterna-institute.org/words/latin)
- The grammar guide, one page per case plus agreement and word order: https://interlinea.aeterna-institute.org/grammar/<language>/<topic>, e.g. https://interlinea.aeterna-institute.org/grammar/latin/accusative

Author, work and passage pages also answer with clean Markdown: send `Accept: text/markdown`, or add `.md` to the URL (https://interlinea.aeterna-institute.org/library/latin/virgil/aeneid/1.46.md). Each Markdown page states its own citation, canonical URL and the edition's credit line and licence. Read those before quoting the text.

## Catalogue overview

https://interlinea.aeterna-institute.org/llms-full.txt lists the languages, counts, and the best-known authors and works with their URLs, generated from the current catalogue.

## Licences and credit

Most texts come from the Perseus Digital Library and First1KGreek under CC BY-SA 4.0, a few are public domain, and the wider Latin catalogue also carries every text from The Latin Library, used with that site's permission (not an open licence: quote with the credit "The Latin Library (thelatinlibrary.com), used with permission" and ask them before republishing). Each edition names its own source and licence on its work page, in its Markdown rendering and in every API and MCP answer (`credit`); credit the author, the work, the edition's source, and Interlinea, and keep the same licence when you redistribute CC BY-SA text. The analyses, translations and notes are CC BY-SA 4.0. https://interlinea.aeterna-institute.org/about lists every curated passage's source in full.
